About Commons

A moderated community for people who build in public — started in 2027, still run by its own members.

Why we exist

A forum that does not scroll away

“To keep a room open where an honest question gets a real answer, and where that answer is still findable three years later.”

Commons started in 2027 as a group chat between nine people who kept losing good advice to a scrolling window. The archive was the point then and it is still the point now — every thread is permanent, searchable and votable.

We are funded entirely by membership. No ads, no sponsored channels, no data sold on. That constraint decides most of what we build: features that make the room better for the people already in it, rather than features that make it bigger.

About Commons

How we run the place

Three commitments that shape every moderation call we make.

Answers over engagement

Threads are ranked by whether the question got resolved, never by how long people argued. Answered posts get pinned and surfaced in search.

Moderation in the open

Guidelines are short and published. Every removal is logged with a reason, and moderators are drawn from the channels they look after.

Membership, not advertising

Nine dollars a month pays the moderator fund and the servers. Nobody is the product, so nothing is optimised for time on site.

The moderator team

Members first, moderators second — every one of them was active here before they were asked.
